What is it used for?

Slippery elm and marshmallow root both contain mucilage, which forms a gel in water. They are long used to support a soothed, comfortable digestive tract in dogs and cats.

How do I give it?

Mixed with water or food, following the label for your pet's weight. Keep fresh water available.

Does it need spacing from medication?

Yes. Because mucilage coats the gut, it can slow or reduce absorption of medicines given at the same time. Leave a couple of hours either side, and check with your vet if your pet is on anything prescribed.

Will it help with constipation?

It is more commonly used for loose stools and general digestive comfort. For constipation, speak to your vet about a suitable fibre source rather than assuming this is the right choice.

Can I use it long term?

It is generally used in short runs around a period of digestive upset. If your pet needs it continuously, that is worth discussing with your vet — ongoing symptoms point to a cause worth finding.

When should I see my vet?

Reflux, gastritis and inflammatory bowel disease are diagnosed and managed by a vet, and soothing the gut lining does not address the cause. See them for diarrhoea lasting more than a day or two, blood in the stool, repeated vomiting, weight loss, or a pet that is lethargic or off their food.
