Fill the ear canal generously with solution. Then, using your fingers and thumb, grip the canal from the outside and massage it firmly — you should hear the solution squelching inside. Keep massaging for around one minute. With practice, you can do both ears at the same time, though it's fine to do one side at a time when you're starting out. Dirt clings to the lining of the ear canal, which is how it builds up over time. By squeezing and massaging the canal, you break up that debris. When your dog shakes their head, the loosened dirt comes out. Finish by wiping away the dirt and any excess solution.

It can feel a little unfamiliar the first time — but don't worry, you won't hurt them. Many dogs actually enjoy it! You're aiming for the area shown in the diagram below. As you feel along the ear, you'll notice it transitions from a funnel shape into a tube — massage along that whole section, working as far down the canal as you comfortably can to dislodge as much dirt as possible.

It may take a couple of cleans to remove all the built-up dirt. Once you're no longer getting any dirt out, you can move to a weekly maintenance routine. Give your best friend's ears the care they deserve — it's easier than you think!
